Over the months here I occasionally get random weird and rather aggressive comments about adding the alt texts to everything I post. Especially about adding them or providing them.
Those comments remind me of a disabled guy on the bird site back in the days who accused me of being an ableist (a person who discriminates and social prejudices against people with disabilities and/or people who perceive themselves as being disabled). He said it is not okay for me to be helpful in any way because I myself don't have disabilities. He thought it's also not okay for me to talk about the challenges my wife has even with her permission. This kind of hostile behaviour makes me anxious, because I do not consider me writing an alt texts or having a strong opinions about accessible web and accessibility in general as ableism. I don't in any way undermine his feelings, but it still hurts. I don't consider myself even an "ally", I just believe in good things and that kindness is the key.
In my world there is no such thing as a "bad way to help". In my world alt texts should be norm, not the exception. In my world web belongs to everyone. I know how to code so I'm doing everything my power to do good. I don't need to have a blind wife to think of the blind, I did think of them already back in the days in the 90s after got feedback from a blind person who could not jump between headings because I marked them as bold text instead of h-tags. Little did I know that first feedback defined my career as a web developer, I have engraved accessibility in everything I do online and I don't make a fuss about it (this post is the exception).
If you sincerely want to make the Internet better place for everyone, how is that a bad thing? Can someone explain me this? Should I stop adding alt texts because I'm not disabled myself? What I'm doing wrong here? npub1czd0w0swq2f7mypmadze3gtu2s2creyawctm30scz3h3329a7rwq82t3u8 (npub1czd…t3u8) npub1s5l7ah9rsvxxxn2trfjnl6kqh0e29lxyucyvxdmcn40gx4t8ev7s9ym46k (npub1s5l…m46k) npub19ctwsgsquef4aggyjeamkgl62d3saajvmcmhr62h6d0es66tvu2qxzhnkp (npub19ct…hnkp)
