If I have a substance in state A and I take it to state B, if I want to find out its change in internal energy, I just have to imagine an idealized process that achieves that, compute the change in internal energy for that ideal process, which is relatively easy, and that will correspond to the change in internal energy for the actual process? Awesome. I love state functions.
