There is a lot or romantisation happening around the DDR. People keep saying how good childcare was back then, but they forgett that those childcare facilities were indoctrination centers where kids got tought to spy on their parents and friends, and there was also molestation happening, but thats not DDR specific.
And the Slogan of the DDR was "Vorwärts immer, Rückwärts nimmer!"
They would have understood you saying they were holding onto traditions more as an insult likely. They called us the backwards ones.

Don't get fooled by uniforms, the DDR was an abomination. The current state of eastern germany and them voting for right wing parties is a reaction to what happened in the DDR, not a way to bring it back, though lots of people also still vote left there, those want the DDR back.
Communism took german history from eastern germans and replaced it with socialist history. To this day males in eastern germany have names like "Enrico" "Ronny" "Stief" "Mirko" "Sonny"... those aren't german names, they are names that belong to weird commie idols i think.
I hope you will one day visit germany, and when you do so, hit me up, i'm gonna show you around, show you the best food, wines and beers, and then you'll know i was right.
The saddest stuff about eastern germany actually from my memory is that in the late 80s they really became dependent on charity from the west, they didn't have shit. I remember there once was a lack of normal house hold drain plugs and rubber boots, and those who had family across the fence would pack big care packets filled with drain plugs and rubber boots. Shit like that sounds surreal from todays perspective, but thats what it was like.
What i have to admit though. The stuff they produced for export to the west was top notch. Their brand "Privilege" is still famous for being literally indistructible and overly durable. Sadly the people who produced it, couldn't buy it with their Micky Mouse Money that not even other soviet states accepted.
