My impression, which is certainly skewed but it does reflect what I see:
* Distributed systems people are trying to solve the problems of "how do I implement this in a way that performs well, uses reasonable amounts of memory, and scales to where I see things going."
* Ontology people are trying to solve the problem of generic systems representation.
These goals exist in tension with each other, with AS2, AP, and RDF swinging hard for the second group, setting the stage.
