a huge portion of the UK are reactionary swing voters. they don't really pay attention to campaign promises or policy details, they basically just continue to vote for whoever's in until they get fed up with them, then switch to the other main party, and since Labour has been lackluster this leads to a lot of swing voters switching from Tory to LD. the actual underlying political principles the parties are based on end up being irrelevant.
