I'm not bought into this ideology, but I'll defend it for the thought experiment alone. Healthy people flourish in a healthy society and drag along or discard the disruptive ones through various filters. When the situation reverses, society collapses because there's not enough healthy people to carry society along. It is not a deliberate nor conscious process like our biological immune system, but to describe it in such a way disarms moral panic accusations that would otherwise be associated with the concept of a "healthy society".
