I stopped getting annoyed at paying for commercial software when I got my first job out of high school. Good software is worth paying for.
But I don’t trust companies to not leave me in a lurch if they go out of business or even just have a backend service that goes down.
The “ongoing updates while subscription is active” model is an ideal middle ground, IMHO.
