Alright I've finished Joe Abercrombie's First Law books. Both trilogies are funny, gruesome, a good time--though the second trilogy had a thin sub-sub-plot, one that would bubble up maybe once for a half-page every 200 pages of a *possible* token fag romance (describing confused glances), and I'm happy to report the particular POV involved suffers a tragic (not celebrated) arc. [Not a spoiler. A prophecy is given on page 1 clearly indicating.]
I'm surprised that I like the three stand-alone books between the two trilogies just as much--perhaps more, once my thoughts settle.
I might look more toward some fantasy stand-alones, seeing how much I liked these.
