Imagine you’re at a bar, everybody is talking to each other in small groups,
And a scrawny looking guy is going up to everybody and trying to sell them product X. Nobody is paying much attention and business is not so great for this scrawny advertiser.
Suddenly two people start brawling everyone’s attention changes to now look at those two people. The scrawny guy seizes the opportunity and stands on top of a table next to where the brawl is happening and starts shouting about his product X. Product X catches a lot of eyeballs and starts selling more.
The scrawny guy being smart as he is fixes a deal with the barkeep. The barkeep himself insights a brawl, drawing the public attention, the scrawny guy advertises and sells. At the end he pays the bartender some amount for the attention he got.
This system is very bad for the bar goers, who have to deal with a brawl, or sometimes become the brawlers themselves. But it’s great for the advertiser and the barkeep.
If you haven’t caught up yet the barkeep is Twitter, the scrawny guy are the advertisers, the brawls are fixed by the algorithm and the brawlers are YOU.
