In many ways, this history is echoed in the creation of Nostr and BlueSky's ATProto.
Both of which were created to address perceived limitations in ActivtyPub. The W3C standard that came out of an attempt to unify the fediverse (using OStatus), the Federation (using Diaspora's variant), and the network of apps and servers federating over Zot (only Diaspora still use only their own protocol and Zot is discontinued).
Hopefully the history will continue to repeat, unifying all 3 networks.
