I’m gonna tell you a sad truth.
Apple sucks now.
Before you burn me at the stake, hear me out.
They suck because they have to suck. Capitalism is a slow-growing cancer; no matter how visionary or beautiful the things you want to make are, Capitalism will only let you make them if it’s profitable in the immediate term. So while there are some great people working there, artists and designers and some really competent coders, and their overall drive is to make cool stuff, the fact is that they are in the late stages of a disease, way past cure or effective treatment. Every cool idea that gets brought up only survives if the bean counters get more beans to count.
Now, Apple *always* wanted to make a profit. That’s not a problem in and of itself. But for two main periods of time, they took risks on cool ideas because the urge to make cool stuff was stronger than the urge to turn a dollar into a buck ten. Apple’s best days were when they were a small company in the early stages of growth, and now they are a bloated patient in hospice like everyone else.
And you know what? Apple is no worse in this than every other consumer electronics company. They are not in any way special in their position in the hierarchy of shit. They have merely fallen to parity with the consumer divisions of every other tech company.
Capitalism will kill everything you love, and turn all art into pure liquid manure, because runny shit is easier to sell than art.
