I think everything a person can accomplish in life requires developing themselves in some way. You cannot grow to become a better writer without growing as a person, but whether that growth is a responsibility is a tough question! Mostly I think a person's responsibility is to grow into their place in the world, and if that place is as a writer then that is their responsibility.
