I grew up in a small rural town. But it had a grade school and highschool. When I attended, the highschool had a total enrollment of 45.
2 years after I graduated the highschool was turned into a junior high for the region, and the larger highschool in a neighboring town became the regional highschool.
Not many years after I graduated college the junior high my highschool had become was closed. It didn't affect my determination to graduate college and eventually even attend graduate school, but it did cause me some sad feelings.
A small highschool feels much like family, and so much of one's childhood memories are attached to that school. It seems to leave a hole in your heart.
