With unprecedented confrontational moves in recent months, the Korean peninsula is possibly moving closer to war than ever. Are we getting another Korean War?

The DPRK leader Kim Jong Un ordered the country’s military to prepare to “pacify the entire territory of South Korea,” including with nuclear bombs, if necessary, according to state news agency KCNA.

Meanwhile, the President of the Republic of Korea (ROK), Yoon Suk Yeol, pledged to accelerate work to complete a system using “extended deterrence,” referring to the use of US military assets, including nuclear weapons.

The escalations come as, together with the US, Yoon was quick to use the situation in the Middle East to stir up conflict on the Korean peninsula.

Yoon has since scrapped the historic inter-Korean military agreement signed in 2018, re-arming troops at the border and conducting unprecedented joint military drills with the US and Japan.

Simultaneously, the US has deployed more military assets to the Korean peninsula, including nuclear-armed submarines, large aircraft carriers, and long-range bombers.

Together with the US, the ROK has threatened to unleash a “hell of destruction” on the DPRK while also having drawn absurd comparisons to Israel’s war on Gaza.

The last time the ROK and US unleashed a “hell of destruction” during the Korean War, they destroyed nearly all of the DPRK’s cities and towns, including an estimated 85% of its buildings, and killed a total of 1.2 million civilians.
