A good layer of self custody safety/security is geographical distribution. Break your12 words into small pieces example: 4 pieces with 3 words each. Store them in four separate locations. Etch/stamp them into washers, brackets or a piece of steel, fireproof is good. Nail it into an attic, basement, at your cabin, cellar, garage, maybe stationary equipment of some kind that only you have access to etc.. places only you know and trust is safe.
There are many ways to obscure your bitcoin key (12 words). You can create a separate language key so the words/numbers or symbols you have stored on steel/metal would have to be deciphered using the translation key only you create, though this creates a second piece you must keep safe.
If one letter is off, your key is useless, so changing or omitting a word or a few words could be good if you are transporting the keys or something temporary.
Border wallets are good for temporary use. You can make your own border wallet if you understand how they are made, easy to look it up. You can make multiple border wallets for one key.
You can have 4 sets of 12 words and each set of 12 words could contain part of your key. There are other ways to do it. And other features like of course adding a passphrase splitting that into pieces too.
Blockstream has a great book on different methods.
There seems to always be new creative ways to do it and it's wise not to share all your methods of course.
Collaborative custody might make sense if you're married or splitting an account with business or family. Update your system when new methods are learned if you think it's better. Study #bitcoin
