This morning, I went to sit in the park for some quiet reading, and a 12-year-old kid named Anthony came over and sat next to me. He started asking questions about what I was reading, if I was an adult, and what I did for work. When I told him I’m a photographer, he looked puzzled. I explained, and he said, “Oh, you mean you take pictures?” I had to laugh a bit—it’s surprising he didn’t already know that.
As we talked, I noticed he didn’t really seem to get a lot of things. At one point, he picked up a piece of plastic, thought it was glass, and couldn’t see the difference. It got me thinking about how kids today are growing up and what they’re learning—or maybe missing—along the way. It was an interesting reminder of how differently some kids see the world right now.
