@Bernard Marks @The Felon Pope :popephil: @Jazzilla Notice how most of those nations are at high latitudes. There could be a correlation with depression and sunshine, could there not? More specifically, a correlation with Vitamin D consumption and or production. It should be studied, but there isn't any money in such studies, but ironically, there is much money in the dispensing of antidepressants.

The thing with sunlight exposure, is that it must be done when the angle of the sun, relative to one's position on earth, is above fifty percent. I track the sun as a matter of fact there are a few websites that will calculate the angle of the sun relative to one's position..

Skin color really matters in this as well. The lighter the skin the easier it is for one to manufacture Vitamin D. White skin will produce 20,000 IU of vitamin D in thirty minutes of sun exposure under the right conditions. Which are, just wearing shorts, having the angle of the sun above fifty degrees and no sunscreen. Other skin tones will require longer periods of exposure.

One can spend as much time in the sun as long as one doesn't burn. It should be done daily if possible, because, even though Vitamin D is oil soluble, it is in high demand in the body. Plus since most of us living in the northern hemisphere get sporadic sunlight at best, we also must supplement. Vitamin D is almost impossible to get sufficiently, through food. The exceptions being, fatty fish, eggs and cod liver oils.

It is imperative that we deliberately expose as much of our skin to sunlight in the Spring and Summer without burning. It has worked for me and many others. I've lived in places like Fairbanks Alaska and Upstate New York and had suffered a bout with Vitamin D deficiency since I barely went outside into the sun. Sunlight exposure is critical to having good moods. At any rate people should do their own experiments and for the moment sunlight is still free.

There is one important thing to realize too. All sunlight isn't equal. Take the sunlight in Fairbanks Alaska, for instance. Fairbanks is very close to the 65° mark. The angle of the sun will never approach 50° so that sunlight, as far as manufacturing Vitamin D in the body, is useless for that purpose. However, sunlight has other benefits as well. Namely warmth, radiation, infrared and benefits that man may or may not be aware of. The benefits of sunlight exposure outweigh the risks of skin cancer. Just be careful not to burn.
