An old friend of mine who single-handedly led a successful effort to get sexual orientation added to a university’s non-discrimination policy, at a time when his tenure was more protective than it probably would be today, said he felt a responsibility to speak out on behalf of those who could not for fear of repercussions such as job loss. One thing those of us who are in a position to merely feel some awkward discomfort can do is call out bigotry as offensive and unacceptable when we hear it from a coworker, acquaintance, or family member. We can also support strangers when we see them experience discrimination. These are small ways to resist at a time when bigotry has been enabled by national leaders who should be ashamed of themselves. The shamefulness of it must be firmly reasserted. (3/3)
