As much as I dislike the indignity of anyone talking to Putin, the politics of this suggests that Scholz and other world leaders who backed him having talks with Putin are basically green-lighting discussions which they all suspect will go nowhere, so they can then use that fact diplomatically against Trump's likely future attempts to push them towards selling Ukraine out.
It's an organized way to marginalize Trump's influence and avoid being hijacked to get on the Trump train.
