In a final act of continuing the disappointment, Fedora Linux won't eject the backup drive for several minutes after copying is finished. Shut down the system expecting any buffers to be force written and disk being cleanly ejected, but the OS has decided to hang instead.
Good bye, this was a good learning experience. I have renewed respect for the efforts put in by FreeBSD community in the quietly great OS they're building.
