I had a slice of pie tonight the crust of which was accidentally made with flour so old that it had gone bad. It was immediately obvious that something was wrong. It was rancid and tasted awful. But also, this rancid awful crust was a flavor I had never before experienced in my life. Terrible, yes, but totally new and not comparable to anything else I know. It was like seeing a new color that I never want to see again but still marvel at the novelty of. Gross and kind of beautiful.
