What if there was some kind of international clearing organization, funded by multiple countries with "scanning centers" you could get any fossil scanned and it'd get a little tag and if it were needed for research it could be called in on loan or purchased by a museum or university.
And at least there would be high-res photos and 3D scans even if the original is lost...
