I respect developers who require some hoops to jump through when contacting. GitHub issues are social media and often are too low friction for people to ask simple things like usage questions. Email contact is nice, and I will always take the time to create a detailed and thorough message with more than enough info, but not overwhelming to another developer. I don't expect a quick response as OSS maintainers usually have a life outside their projects, but just a friendly and thoughtful response is S tier.
Don't forget, user's can't care that you don't have a support staff, you are the support staff. Do what you have to do allow yourself to be helpful and let other helpful people help you.
It's often a two way street. I notified a developer about a warning that popped up after a recent release. He helped me understand why it was there and what I should do, and I helped him learn about an edge case he could adjust his builds for. In fact it made him question why he made the change in the first place, and said he was going to review it lol. We helped each other. Crazy.
