If the ownership of any particular metal object was the primary influence for any mindset then the USA would currently be a free, independent republic rather that a collectivist federal democracy of socialist government dependents. Like you said, the USA is not far behind Europe at all, despite gun ownership. It's not the guns, it's something else.
