Most pbm games I have seen have the feature that the turn results for each month are discussed in what is effectively a local gossip newspaper, often with news and ads from players discussing their opinions with one another, setting duel dates, and doing society announcements.
Some of these have been around for quite a while. Les Petites Bêtes Soyeuses might be the longest running one right now, and it has been around since 1986.
