I was trying to type the word "commiseration" and got hung up on the spelling. It turns out it only has one S because it's cognate with the word "misery." I looked up the etymology (because nerd) and there's not a direct connection to the modern usage--it goes back to an archaic meaning of "miser."
Regardless, the idea of "commiseration" as "sharing someone's misery" has a certain poetic beauty to it, methinks.
