I have been taking care of the PC of my 80+ year old ex-neighbour for years and every time she wanted to pay me for the effort. I declined multiple times before she suggested that she could cook for me as compensation. Found that a very good idea. After the first time, as I was ready to leave, she grabbed me by the arm and asked when I was coming again. Then I noticed, this was not about PC or compensation, but about loneliness. We have been having weekly lunches together ever since (as far as Covid did not came in the way).
Please be receptive for loneliness signals. It is really tragic and a small thing can have a big impact.
