i used to see this trend in queer fiction, where gay stories were funny, and lesbian stories were just Sad As Hell. or self-consciously absorbed with theory. it was like the difference between sass culture and drowning Ophelia.

i'm not sure how true this is anymore. but sometimes it's hard to find lesbian stories with actual jokes in them. as a human i, too, like to laugh! sometimes the world is ugly to us but it's ridiculous, too. point the ridiculous things out. invite us to laugh at them.
