Since I've never been a Mac person I always disliked those things. Which is why I have never had unity installed for more than a day.
I understand the appeal though. We tend to like the things we grow accustomed to.
For me I activate the traditional menu bar in Firefox, have my window controls at the upper right, and my start menu at the bottom of the screen.
Lately I'm experimenting with a vertical menu bar (panel) on the left but only for open windows. So far so good.
