Governments here in the US states where it has been legalized have likewise done a terrible job explaining it. The good news is that unlike alcohol where you can kill yourself by drinking too much, the worst that is likely to happen to you by eating too many edibles is that you will freak out and have a panic attack. Edibles should never be recommended for first-time consumers of cannabis, as they are the hardest to dose correctly, take seemingly forever to take effect (so people take more and more, thinking it isn’t doing anything) and the effects can last for many hours (especially if you take a lot).

A standard pre-roll has 1g of flower. At 20% that is 200mg of THC. When smoked, an estimated 20-27% of the THC makes it into your system, so even if you smoked an entire 20% per-roll alone, that is 40-54mg of THC. That’s too much for a first-time smoker, but the higher will peak quickly and start coming down, so unlikely to cause a panic attack.

Eating eight 5mg edibles instead of one would give you about the same dose, but it wouldn’t start kicking in for an hour (faster on an empty stomach), but would keep getting stronger and stronger and could last for several hours. That’s enough to make some people panic.
