FOSS projects are usually organized with the expectation that everyone is working in their free time, there's usually not hard deadlines or strong expectations except for people managing the infrastructure, where ofc they're expected to keep it running with a reasonable uptime. And usually the expectation of contributing to FOSS is the most you'll get is work experience. These are all things that are already given in FOSS spheres, so I can't tell if they just aren't communicated to non-developers or if artists write if off as “working for exposure” (as if literally everyone else other than that one person working for Red Hat isn't doing everything for free too)
