The workaround was to do anything they might not approve of when they were out of the house (or tied up with something that would take a while and they'd be unlikely to break in the middle of just to walk through, like working out) and just clean up the evidence afterwards.
Things that were saved I relied on security-through-obscurity; stick it in a zip folder, bury it in a chain of hidden folders, give everything names that make it sound like a system/program thing, and trust that no one knows what I'm up to enough to look into it and trace it to me.
School we didn't have that much computer time, and it was always with teachers and a bunch of other students around, so I never tried there.
