Over a decade ago I took a year off to explore "open data" and play with all kinds of tools (pre-ml craze, pre-llm hype).
I can still recommend shell scripts, makefiles, gnuplot, serious knowledge of SQL, regex as a useful base. D3.js is still awesome, Observable totally worth looking into and #R remains my favorite language/tool to do more "data" with.
And yes, "observability" is very much about data, more than ever.
