I think this image owes much to the Mary Lwyd, but in any case it's a seminal work by a seminal artist, who was some rare kind of lover, as well, to judge from the important beds he passed through with great alacrity all through the mid-20th c. He was self-taught and therefore freer to experiment, inventing visions and new techniques with paint (like frottage & grattage) which may seem obvious to us today, but were outsider innovations.
