Trick is in a firmware. Just install OpenWrt on it. I don't think any proprietary firmware is secure so trash every one of them. If it's FOSS, there is lower probability of a backdoors, because it's harder to hide.
“But what about XYZ?” Router company you ask? They probably at least collecting your data. And yes it's also case of the ubiquity. Just install openwrt on it if you can.
