In case you’re wondering, yes, I tried NsCDE. That had issues of its own. For some reason, it hijacked PgDn and Up Arrow by default, so cursor movement was completely borked. Window placement and activation was also hit and miss. I wound up learning just enough about fvwm to fix these things, but it bothered me that I had to in the first place.
On the bright side, it supplied CDE lookalike GTK themes, which helps newer apps like Firefox blend in a little better.
