I think a lot of the problems on social media stem from the fact most of us don't know how to act within a community.
We're communal creatures that long for connection, but we've been brainwashed into an overly-individualistic mindset that neither serves ourselves or our communities. So now we've got a whole bunch of lonely people who only really know how to act in their own self-interest because that's the behavior society rewards while condemning communal ones.
And, from personal experience, trying to unlearn individualistic behaviors without a healthy community to offer support is tough as hell. It's gotten easier now that I'm surrounded by positive influences. Leaning on empathy, both for the self and others, seems to help too. But I'm still very much a work-in-progress myself.
