My apologies if I misunderstand this topic (let me know), I didn't spend days following every debate.
I don't use paid relays, and here's how it looks like from my noob POV.

I use more than 20~30 relays and still can't see MANY messages in this discussion. Same with many other threads these days.
Notes disappear.
This didn't happen before paid relays started to pop up everywhere like mushrooms. I suppose it's related. We need to fix this ASAP.

Nostr was born yesterday and it looks like it's already being segmented. You're building walled-gardens and splitting the network. That's not a good thing.
"You" = paid relay admins, and users happily paying to use them.
Again that's just my POV, and I hope I'm wrong. But the UX is deteriorating on my side.

You want to charge sats for your relay? Totally fine with that and I even support it. It's a great idea and I recognize the effort it tskes to run a relay. But please do it without building walls between users, and don't force people to pay sats in order to use Nostr properly.

Good to see some of us like Martti Malmi (npub1g53…drvk) (developer of the Iris client) are taking a different approach to fight spam instead of the "easy/greedy" one (triggering intended). He's hiding notes based on whether the nostrich is part of your extended social network (several hops).
As long as this behavior remains OPTIONAL, it looks like a pretty good idea. Users should have the last say about what gets filtered. They should be able censor their feed as they see fit, or even not at all.

I know running a relay ain't easy nor free. But maybe there are other ways to fund it and block spam. Donations, a few premium & non vital features like archiving, etc. Worst case, ads.
Good to see that some users and paid relay admins are in favor of this :)

I didn't leave Twitter for entering another permissioned & censored network, or a network where paid users and free-riders can't interact properly.

That's just my understanding at the moment. Sorry if I miss the point (I kind of hope I did). In that case feel free to explain me like I had 4 shots and I'm still asking for more.
Love you all.
PV.
