To be fair, everyone does know deep down that « in my day X cost Y ». But people also believe that advertising doesn’t work on them. Combine exceptionalism with traditionally low-ish inflation rate and people don’t connect the dots realise that they’re getting boiled. The benefit of recent high inflation is that people are starting to feel the water heating up.
