In 1871 my great, great grandfather moved from Zurich Switzerland to Southwest Missouri and settled the farm that my uncle still runs. It’s one of the few century farms that remains in the immediate area.
This past summer I popped over to Zurich while visiting Germany and found myself looking around at the land, the water, the politics, the wealth distribution. I spend much time trying to understand what might have cause that grandfather and his two brothers to pack up and travel thousands of miles to a big empty land just as full of hope and opportunity as danger and adversity.
Was he running from the wealth classes that were already set and posed as walls of obstacle for anyone seeking to improve their wealth and happiness. Or were they running toward the opportunity afforded to them by the vast swaths of empty land, unclaimed real estate, and open social structure where work can prove your worth.
As I had these thoughts, I realized that the DNA that drove them toward a chance at victory despite the risks, may also yet be in my bones. Bitcoin is the same thing. It’s just digital, global, and less likely to have you crossing paths with rattlesnakes. But, there is a trail being blazed here, and new land being settled by the bold.
