How hot is it? zone 9b, is CA, TX, NM, AZ right? your lettuce is hot. Give it some shade. Then, harvest the top leaves (leave the lower ones) and trim that center stalk to get it redirect its energy to leaves not stalk. and keep the soil nice and moist for coolness.

(Im in Canada, I never have to worry about leggy lettuce. ;)
