Most Christians just accept a certain amount of ambiguity and mystery, I think.
I've never actually noticed any correlation between someone taking the entire thing literally and faithfulness, but just thinking it's a metaphor is missing the point. There are lots of sagas and metaphors, all based upon ancient stories. This one is important because it's true.
