Heather Cox Richardson: Republicans established Federal funding for education in 1953 after Russia beat us to space, concerned that our students weren't learning enough. Ever since Reagan campaigned on defunding education, Republicans have been working to make our students stupid so citizens will agree with them that our education department is incompetent. Why? Because Republicans want federal funding to support all white, all Christian schools.
