New observations from JWST have found several key ingredients for life in early-stage protostars, where planets are about to form. These are chemicals like methane, acetic acid, and ethanol, which other telescopes have tentatively found. Webb has taken these observations to the next level, detecting strong signals from various complex organic molecules in interstellar ice. They were previously seen in the warm gas phase, but the solid ice phase is even earlier.
