this is a good example of getting angry over something that makes sense at the end of a long chain of reasoning that you've gone through, without ever going back to first principles and looking at it through a clear lens.
1. these purchases were made on the day of. So, this isn't insider trading. This was something anyone could've done.
2. Buying Raytheon supports Raytheon. Raytheon is a US defense corp, so buying Raytheon supports US defense. Yes, you also benefit if the stock goes up, but stock isn't getting sold as a charity. It's investment.
3. Wanting to support your own country's defense industry, at a time when it seems like it's going to be more important, is completely natural.
4. That this was done on the day of the invasion makes it LESS rather than MORE suspicious. You get the news of war -> you immediately support your side of the war -> the end. Rutherford could've done this while essentially knowing nothing at all about the conflict, either its origins or how the conflict would proceed. An investment today is more an endorsement of how the war's gone, more an endorsement of decisions like Zelenskyy's to reject the early peace deal after Boris Johnson promised infinite support.
5. Making money off of successful defense industry investments, AFTER the news breaks, is just about the least disgusting thing any Congressman has ever made money. It wasn't a bribe. It wasn't Nancy Pelosi insider trading. It wasn't enormous amounts of quid pro quo or grift. It was an investment that could've easily lost Rutherford money if Raytheon products had turned out to be trash on the battlefield and Ukraine immediately collapsed and Russia started doing gangbusters selling their much more robust tech, in competition with US war exports.
Rutherford's on the appropriations committee so it should've been easy to hit him for much more dubious stock trading than this.
