Getting swipes and other gestures right is really hard. They impose a cognitive load that labelled buttons do not. These kind of gestures are practically needed on touchscreen devices like phones because a phone has an infinite variety of apps offering different functionality.
But if you’re building a lamp and you want a dial to change the brightness, get an actual dial. A rotary potentiometer costs 50p. As does a simple rocker switch.
