it's both deliberate (I almost never post selfies anywhere) and not-deliberate (I don't take selfies hardly ever, but much more due to apathy than due to any objection to doing so)
also having been online since 1992 or so, I'm just used to being an abstract entity because that's how everybody interacted for my first decade or so on the internet - I wasn't a big USENET participant, so my first major experience of people using irlnames & photos was Facebook in 2004
