I'm not sure eliminating Hamas was the primary objective, more a bi-product. Israel are creating a land uninhabitable for its previous and existing citizens - I believe Isreal's plan is to repopulate it as part of Israel, and that involves both depopulation, and land clearance, so they can rebuild with little trace of its previous inhabitants left to remind people of the horrendous cost to life (and morality). (Much like their main benefactor).
