I ended up buying one of those £40 Anbernic RG35XXPluses from AliExpress, more out of curiosity than anything else. I have to say, it’s an immensely capable little device for the money. Stuff like Pier Solar and Xeno Crisis run great, and it can even stretch to some Dreamcast homebrew stuff. Plus, the screen is far better than it has any business being at that price. It even plays Doom. Other than being a bit small for my (admittedly large) hands, I’d say it’s a winner.
