We don’t need them because the vast majority of people joyfully comply with every demand, no matter how silly. The “independent media” are all enthusiastic parrots of state propaganda.
The few who resist are shamed and bullied as you say. The fewer still who actually pose a threat to the system, like Julian Assange, are jailed and tortured.
